MSTPF’s annual Pathfinder award is meant to honor and recognize those dedicated community members who go above and beyond to provide outdoor opportunities in our community! For 2024, we are thrilled to announce Alan McClain is the recipient of the Mat-Su Pathfinder Award.
The recipients of the Pathfinder Award are chosen by Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation Board. We have decided that there are enough wooden plaques in the world, so for this award, each recipient will be eligible to select a non-profit of their choice to grant $1,000. Alan has selected Alaska Trails to receive the $1000 Pathfinder discretionary grant.

Alan has served the Mat-Su communities as a Trails Technician and Specialist since 2016, establishing himself as a distinguished Alaskan trail professional renowned for his exceptional blend of technical expertise, relationship-building, and outstanding team leadership.
Throughout his career, Alan has excelled at cultivating cohesive teams, mentoring individuals, and ensuring that each member feels valued, fostering an environment of collaboration and high performance. His work will have a lasting imprint on the outdoor recreation landscape and contributes to the development of community trail assets that will be enjoyed by both residents and visitors for generations.
Notable projects under Alan’s leadership include the Mat River Park trail development, the Crevasse Moraine connector reroute, the West Butte stair project and retaining wall, the Settler’s Bay Coastal Park trail design and development, the Talkeetna Ridge Trail, and the Matanuska Peak reroute. Thanks to Alan and his team’s unwavering dedication, the Mat-Su Borough is undoubtedly a better place to live, work, and play.
