Project Highlight at Little Su Rotary Park

Trail and park improvements are happening at the Little Susitna Rotary Park in Houston!

Earlier this summer, volunteers with the Rotary Club of Susitna, laid out a few hundred feet of geoweb and gravel for the early stages of a planned interpretive trail that will weave through the forest alongside the Little Susitna River.

Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation Board Member Chelsea Pardo volunteers with Susitna Rotary Club to help install geoweb at Little Susitna Rotary Park on July 14, 2024.

The planned interpretative trail will inform and engage the public, and particularly young children, about how to be safe around water to prevent child drownings. The “Josh the Otter” water safety picture book will be featured on storybook signage along the trail, promoting water safety and literacy. In addition to the interpretive trail, Susitna Rotary will construct an accessible viewing platform that will provide access to nature and river viewing for all. Susitna Rotary has future plans of a 0.25 nature loop trail that will connect to the “Josh the Otter” story walk; providing ample opportunities for residents and visitors alike to explore and learn about the surrounding ecosystem.

City of Houston and some grant funding from Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation (MSTPF) is helping provide funding for this project. MSTPF grant funding will be used to build 80 feet of boardwalk to ensure safe passage along seasonally wet segments of the trail.

There are many ways to currently enjoy the Little Susitna Rotary Park, whether you want to try your hand at fishing, launch a boat, or have a picnic! Enjoy these photos of the park, and take in the beauty of the Little Su! Thank you to the Rotary Club of Susitna for all your hard work improving public access and helping to educate and inform the public about water safety!
