Jonathan Rupp Strong, Mountaineering Club of Alaska Board
The Mountaineering Club of Alaska (MCA) is an all volunteer run local non-profit with more than 1000 members. Our mission is to foster safe and enjoyable mountaineering experiences for our members and the community at large. MCA hosts regular community and skill building meetings and outings. We also maintain a series of backcountry huts, which provide shelter and access to some of the Mat-Su valley’s premier mountain country at Hatcher Pass. MSTPF funding has previously been instrumental in building and maintaining these huts. MCA is now employing MSTPF funds to make emergency repairs to our Bomber Hut. The hut was damaged by bear activity over the summer. MSTPF funds allowed MCA to procure winterization repair materials, and to order replacement windows to be installed next summer. These huts provide adventure, solitude, and camaraderie for many Mat-Su residents and visitors. Countless trips-of-a-lifetime take place out there. Many friendships are formed and relationships solidified. We are excited for further partnership between our organizations, and continuing to improve these valuable community assets.
